Track report 23rd January

Another good turn out for our monthly track session 17 rode in the main session for experienced riders with a 2 adult and 2 youth novices joining the 3 other youths for the more gentle hour at the end.
In the main session we started with the usual 20 minute warm up the first 15 minutes in one long string on the blue line, one lap on the front before moving up and dropping to the end on the line and the last 5 minutes down on the black line when the pace was increased – end result every one nicely warmed up.
We then moved on to the first exercise which again had all the riders in one long line riding at tempo on the blue line, then on hearing the whistle the front rider would accelerate ( while still in the saddle) down to the black line and proceed as fast as possible to lap the bunch and then join on the back of the line, some of the fitter more adventures rides had the opportunity to take 2 laps on the bunch ( this did test a few!!).
Next exercise was simply riding in 2 line as a nice tempo with the lead rider moving up and down the track as much as they wished with the riders behind all following the same route, each rider was given a turn on the front.
We then split into 4 and 5 man teams to practice a team pursuit routine changing every lap, each team firstly did 10 laps and then they were all given another ride when the distance was increased to 15 laps. Its fair to say everyone improved greatly between rides 1 and 2 but it did make everyone appreciate the skill in doing this at a top leave as demonstrated so many times at major championships by our own GB team.
Next was a skill exercise we had 2 lines of riders riding around the track 2 a breast about 1 -2 metres apart at a nice steady tempo then one at a time the riders at the back would ride down the middle between the riders until they reached the front when they would join into the line once again, this is to get riders used to riding in a large group and close to other riders not all travelling at the same speed, it is something we have done before but I have to say it was carried out much better than in previous sessions- well done to all riders.
We finished of the session with an exercise called hunter which involves 2 groups of riders on the blue line riding on opposite sides of the track again riding at tempo, 3 active riders are then set off as hard as they can go on the black line as soon as the catch a group the front rider will peel off on to the back of that line the other 2 will continue, the front rider from the group they have just caught will then drop down on the back of the active riders to make the number back up to 3 when they will the chase down the other group when the same thing will happen all over again.
The last 5 minutes where free track time for the riders to wind down after that final little work out.

Then on to the novice / youth hour, we had 4 new faces who had never ridden on the track before and 2 who had never ridden a fixed wheel before. After some nervous starts we had all 4 newcomers soon riding very well along with the 3 other youth riders. For a bit of run we gave them each the opportunity to try a standing start lap racing against another rider on the opposite of the track we then finished the session but letting then try a timed flying lap and the results are as below ( I would add Alex is an experienced rider and had stayed behind to help and as you can see his time and speed is notably quicker that the others. Having said that Antony was not hanging around!)
Well done to everyone

Track report 19th December

Well today we had 18 riding the main 2 hour session ( we did have 24 booked but some had to cancel at the  last minute ) which is great and have only 18 on the day did help bearing in mind the track limit is 20!.

Of that 18 only 5 where Poole Wheelers we also had 4 from Bournemouth Jubilee Wheelers, 4 from Bournemouth Arrow, 2 from Poole Cycle Speedway, 1 from the New Forest 1 from the Chapel Tristars and 1 unattached. As well as a good mix of different clubs we had a wide ability mix and some exercises were split so to work the more experienced riders a little harder and other where the less  experienced riders where paired off with experienced riders to help them learn to ride the track more competently.

In the last hour we had 4 other ride in a much slower / novice  session  and it was appreciated that a few of the first group stayed behind to help and ride with them a good experience for all concerned.

This small group all finished by doing a timed flying lap and there times are as below

The biggest problem was the cold it was below freezing when we arrived and only just above freezing outside when we left although I’m sure it was still below freezing in track.

The good new is I have booked some warmer weather for January lets hope I get it!!!!

Anyway if anyone wants to ride the January session please do book a place, remember its only Poole Wheelers (1st and 2nd claim) who can book earlier I will only take bookings from riders from other clubs from the Saturday 1 week before the session.
