Name – Michael Graven

Year of birth – 1972 (17th November in case you want to get me a present)

Main cycling activities

Road (but that scene is pretty bleak around here at the moment), starting to get into track, and obviously TTs though they can’t really be described as enjoyable in any way, shape or form!  It should be noted that I’m not particularly good at any of the above.

Hobbies outside of cycling

– Going to the pub, football and cricket.  Clearly the hobbies of the more sophisticated element of society.

Best cycling moment

– Etape du tour 2005

Worst cycling moment

– Crashing in a road race at Barnsfield in June 2004, ending up in hospital and effectively writing the rest of that season off.  On a positive note I got some really cool scars, and the most amazing bruising around my “mid-riff” you’ve ever seen!  Every cloud has a silver lining……..

Favorite food

– oooh this is a tricky question.  I’m big into eating anything that once had a pulse, but am also big into chocolate hobnobs.

Best excuse for poor performance

– I’m permanently knackered due to having 2 pre-school age kids who never sleep.  It’s not an excuse though, it’s a fact!

Favorite music

– fairly eclectic (!?) from The Damned to Interpol, to Arcade Fire to Foo Fighters to Queens of the Stone Age.  None of your middle of the road rubbish!!

Training tip

– Keep it enjoyable and varied.  Something I continually fail to do.  Plus, most important, don’t try be in peak form for every race and use some of them as quality training and don’t get too hung up about the result. Also, don’t let your training dictate the rest of your life, especially social life.

Carbon or Titanium? – I wish I could afford either of them.  Aluminium for me.

Turbo or Road? – Definitely road.  If you enjoy turbo training you need to have a word with yourself and go find a life!
